The first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was born on the 14th of November. One of the forerunners of the Indian freedom movement, Nehru was a prominent leader of the Indian National Congress and is considered to be the architect of modern India. He was credited for designing most of India’s foreign policies and among other things, he was famous for his love for children. He was loved by everyone and as a gesture of love and affection, he was also addressed as “Chacha Nehru”. Hence, his birthday is celebrated as Children’s Day throughout India.

Childrens’ Day is a monumental day in our calendar and is celebrated across all schools in India. For the students, the day is synonymous to no classes, free gifts and food packets provided by their schools. It is a well-known fact that Nehru used to visit one or two schools on this day and celebrate his birthday with them.

Children are the key to a better future as the children of today are the leaders of tomorrow. Hence, it is on the 14th of November every year, Children’s Day is celebrated with much gusto and enthusiasm, in order to remind everyone the importance that children hold and how with the right upbringing, they can steer mankind to greatness.

This day also holds reverence to the inner child in all of us, and no matter how grim reality may be, it is our responsibility to find the strength and courage to preserve that little shred of innocence that resides in every human being.
