A boxing career with a span of over 18 years, Mary Kim quickly rose to fame, making her international debut at the first AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championship in United States and winning a silver medal in the 48 kg weight category. She has never looked back since then, and has made the whole country proud on several occasions. She is a role model for all the women who have to give up on their dreams and aspirations, due to their responsibility to their families.
In a country where cricket is like a religion, it is extremely hard to find success and glory in other forms of sports and even harder, if you’re a woman who wants to make a name for herself in boxing. Owing to her humble roots, Mary Kom’s father did not want his daughter to take up boxing as in doing so might hamper her chances in finding a suitable groom. It is clear that the path towards glory and success is never easy, as Mary Kom thwarted off each and every impediment standing between her and her goals. She kept on working towards her goal, and made sure that the world knows what she’s made of. As a nation, we are nothing but proud of the glory that she has attained.
