The last presidential election, in 2012, ended with Pranab Mukherjee being sworn in to take the position. Now, the time has come for a new election! But first, let’s look back at his legacy. His career began in the 1960s, since then he’s held posts in Congress and managed several ministries over time. He’s known to have a vast knowledge of administrative policies and also of the constitution. He has spoken out against intolerance, messy policy-making in the government, and also about the importance of democratic values. Arguably, he’s left his office in a far better condition than what it was when he had resumed it 5 years ago.
On July 17, 2017, the elections for the new president will take place. Ram Nath Kovind, the Governor of Bihar, is BJP’s candidate for this election. Congress’ candidate is Meira Kumari. She is the former speaker of the Lok Sabha. Elected members of both the houses of parliament, as well as legislative assemblies of all the states will come together to sworn in the new president.
