As the majority of us are currently following the test match between India and West Indies with great zeal, one can’t help but notice the meteoric rise of the new cricketing big shot, Prithvi Shaw. Slamming a century on his debutante test match, Shaw has become the youngest Indian to achieve this stellar feat. Interestingly, he’s also the second youngest Indian ever to score a test century, right after the titan of cricket, Sachin Tendulkar.
Shaw received a lot of praises from other famous cricketers for his delightful knock, etching his name to the wall of legends consisting the likes of Lala Amarnath, Mohammad Azharuddin, and Sourav Ganguly. Hailing from Maharashtra, Shaw first came under the limelight in 2013 when he set a mammoth record of 546 runs in a Harris Shield elite division match, which was the highest record score in any organized form of cricket.
Being a right-handed opening batsman with abilities no less than that of a cricket prodigy, Shaw has been frequently compared with the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. Shaw made his first-class debut for Mumbai in the semi-finals of the prestigious Ranji trophy in 2016-17 where he scored a century. Keeping up with this impressive trend, he again scored a century in his debut match of the Duleep Trophy, equalling Tendulkar’s impressive record who also had scored a century both in the Ranji Trophy and Duleep Trophy for the first time.
Shaw surpassed another milestone in December 2017 when he was selected as the captain of the Indian cricket team for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. It was under his captaincy that India won the World Cup beating Australia in the finals by 8 wickets, demonstrating his extraordinary capabilities not only as a player but also as a captain.
With his debut in the test format of cricket, we all wait for many more of such blistering knocks from him in coming years as he goes on to cement his position as an indispensable member of the Indian Cricket team.
